Walker, Pucci de Rossi (1947-2013) is an uncommon designer and artist. Jewellery, furniture, sculpture, painting: his creations, visually striking and functional, refer as much to Arte Povera as to the neo-baroque of the Memphis studio. The different chapters below pay tribute to the career and life of a unique creator. They chronicle the evolution of his work over five decades infused with poetry, derision and humor, where furniture with secrets and objects with surprises turn the categories of the beautiful and the useful upside down. Bijoux, mobilier, sculpture, peinture, ses créations,&nbsp; aussi fortes visuellement que fonctionnelles, renvoient tout autant à l’Arte Povera qu’au néo-baroque du studio Memphis. But rather than merely fixing the broken furniture he found, Pucci dismembered the pieces and rebuilt them. “I could have, for instance, changed the missing leg, but what I liked was to pick up artisanal work and give all those fragments a second life. All the elements that I used were already “used”, I wanted to give that “use” a meaning, and make sure my creations kept a function.” Without knowing it, he was laying the foundations of his first artistic approach, a work on memory, mixing forms and functions, art and furniture. Pucci took advantage of the randomness of the juxtaposed elements, developing a curve, improving a line. He magnified the vernacular and gave birth to a designer's dream: “sculptures to live with”. La maison de VéroneLorsqu’il s’installe dans une maison ancienne de Vérone en 1971, Pucci de Rossi fait le tour des brocanteurs pour l’aménager.&nbsp; Mais, plutôt que de restaurer les meubles, Pucci va les démembrer et les reconstruire.&nbsp; “J’aurais pu changer par exemple le pied qui manquait, mais ce qui me plaisait c’était de récupérer un travail artisanal et de donner une deuxième vie à tous ces fragments. Tous les éléments que j’utilisais étaient déjà “usés”, je voulais donner à cet “usage” toute sa signification, et conserver à mes créations une fonction.”&nbsp; Sans le savoir, il posait là les bases de sa première démarche artistique, un travail sur la mémoire, mêlant formes et fonctions, art et mobilier. Exploitant les accidents des éléments juxtaposés, développant un galbe, améliorant une ligne, Pucci de Rossi magnifie le vernaculaire et donne naissance à un rêve de designer: la “sculpture à vivre”. up in a former plumber’s workshop in the Bastille area. Back then, zinc torn off the roofs, abandoned furniture, debris of all sorts could be found on the sidewalks. They gave Pucci something to expand his creativity, and the most pathetic scraps of technology, the kitschiest objects, the shipwrecks of consumption resurrected as sculptural furniture filled with surrealist poetry. Gradually, however, the plastic form prevailed over the assembly of the disparate, noble materials over salvaged waste, and plastic research over furniture games. Forms roughed out bit by bit, geometric bric-a-brac was liberated, and brillant colors and discordant motifs mixed into well organized cacophony. Surfaces and distinct volumes were composed of heterogenous materials, where high end meets vernacular and form an ironic constructivism tinged with Art Deco. Zinc arraché du toit par les couvreurs, meubles abandonnés, les débris de toutes sortes se retrouvent encore sur les trottoirs, et donnent matière à Pucci d’élargir son travail, où les plus misérables déchets de la technologie, les objets les plus kitsch, les épaves de la consommation ressuscitent dans des meubles-sculpture à la poétique surréaliste. Mais progressivement, la forme plastique va l’emporter sur l’assemblage du disparate, les matériaux de commande sur la récup et les recherches plastiques sur les jeux de mobilier. Les formes dégrossissent, le bric-à-brac géométrique s’émancipe, et les couleurs éclatantes et les motifs discordants s’assemblent dans une cacophonie bien concertée. Surfaces et volumes nets sont composés de matériaux hétérogènes, où le noble côtoie le vernaculaire dans un constructivisme ironique qui se teinte d’Art déco. <img width="523" height="957" The 1990s were the years of ripples and swaying hips. Using brass, lead, and above all very thin plywood boards assembled with great care, Pucci conjured up syncopated volumes. From the simple comma to the most complex scroll, thanks to a unique craftsmanship, he designed and created chairs, tables, desks and bookcases ready for any interpretation and use. Les années 1990 sont celles des ondulations et des déhanchements. A partir de laiton, de plomb, et surtout de planches de contreplaqué très fines assemblées minutieusement, Pucci obtient des volumes plus syncopés. celebrated as a prominent furniture designer. Yet, success flattered him as much as it worried him: "I felt I was being pulled into the design world when it wasn't my calling. I've always been a sculptor. What do I do? Do I give up the function?” Rather than making a decision, he gradually split his work in two. In the studio, he devoted himself solely to the creation of sculptures and works of art, and gave free rein to his most unusual obsessions —screws, bolts and laces, trophies, brands, logos and vanities. At the same time, he developed a pure designer activity, concentrating on the conception of furniture and objects which he delegated to quality craftsmen and makers. This&nbsp;resulted&nbsp;in uncomon pieces, where sculpture was never far behind the object. TransitionsUnanimement reconnu comme créateur de mobilier, le succès flatte autant Pucci qu’il l’inquiète. Il s’interroge: “j’ai senti qu’on me tirait vers le monde du design alors que ce n’était pas ma vocation. J’ai toujours fait de la sculpture. Est-ce que j’abandonne maintenant la fonction?” Plutôt que de trancher, il va petit à petit scinder son travail en deux. Dans l’atelier il se consacre uniquement à la création de sculptures et d’oeuvres d’art, et laisse libre court à ses obsessions les plus insolites —vis, boulons et dentelles côtoient trophées, marques, logos et vanités. En parallèle, il développe une activité de pur designer cette fois, se concentrant sur le dessin et la conception de meubles et objets dont il confie la réalisation à des artisans et industriels de qualité. gallery, met Pucci de Rossi and proposed him a collaboration. Pucci, who had long wanted to develop designs for a wider production, suggested that she set up an edition brand. Mathilde loved the idea, and together they created MADE, a company that produced Pucci’s creations specially designed for it —and eventually reissued some of his earlier pieces. A resin valet, a revisited medallion chair, porcelain lamps and vases are emblematic pieces of this successful collaboration, which allowed Pucci to reach a wider audience. Yet drawing was an important part of his creative life, both as a source and an extension of it. Sketches, preparatory drawings and project proposals bear witness to a mind in constant research. He teemed with ideas and never spare his sketchbooks, drew and painted on a daily bases. Over the years, this everyday activity became a form of expression in its own right, which he kept confidential for a long time. But his desire for eclecticism pushed him in his last years to explore further more this practice, and there is no doubt that watercolors, pastels and grisailles would have broadened the scope of his unique, eclectic spirit. L’oeuvre de Pucci de Rossi est presque exclusivement sculpturale. Pourtant, le dessin comptait une part importante dans sa vie créative, il en était tout à la fois la source et le prolongement. Esquisses, dessins préparatoires et propositions de projets témoignent de cet esprit en recherche permanente, fourmillant d’idées qu’il couchait aussi bien dans ses carnets de croquis que sur un coin de nappe. Cette activité de tous les jours devint au cours des années un mode d’expression à part entière, qu’il garda longtemps confidentiel. Mais son désir d’éclectisme le poussa dans ses dernières années à explorer cette pratique, et nul doute que gouaches, pastels et grisailles allaient élargir encore la palette de cet inclassable
